D'Kar: A small, dusty settlement in the Kalahari Desert of Botswana, where approximately 2,000 Naro and Dcui San people live (thought to be the closest living relatives to the ancestors of the entire modern world). We were once hunters who lived on the Central Kalahari Game Reserve (CKGR), before farmers and cattle owners moved in, and our ways and lives changed. Today: We struggle with health and social issues (tuberculosis, HIV, school retention, teen pregnancy). Our traditional way of living has been eroded by urban development yet we strive to maintain our cultural values. Hope: For most of us, the bright light is art. Art is our refuge, both emotionally and financially. This fundraiser will support health education workshops for San children & youth in the Kalahari Desert of Botswana. They have the highest teen pregnancy & school drop out rates in the country. These workshops will give them skills & build their capacity to deal with their modern day challenges, while learning art from their elders.
Solar Sister's mission: Solar Sister is delivering solar lights to rural, un-electrified communities in sub-Saharan Africa. We combine the breakthrough potential of clean energy technology with a deliberately woman-centered direct sales network to bring light, hope and opportunity to even the most remote communities in Tanzania. Investing in women is not only the right thing to do, it is the smart thing to do. Solar Sister creates sustainable businesses, powered by smart investment in women entrepreneurs. We believe that when you invest in a woman, you invest in the future.

The Congo Leadership Initiative (CLI) develops the next generation of leaders to be catalysts for peace and prosperity in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. CLI has numerous supporters and Board members in DC and will invite them to participate on the night of the fundraiser. We will also accept cash donations at the event. We will need a microphone so that we can thank our supporters.
